Around the town centre of Impfondo, Congo in 30 Photos
April 17, 2013
Come with us for a stroll around our town and market in Congo!

HIGH STREET IMPFONDO

PHONE CHARGING CENTRE
[Most people don’t have electricity at home]

Phone charging centre

BEAUTY PARLOUR

Beauty salon for Manicure / Pedicure

IKEA

Ikea

COUTURE
[Mostly second hand. I have seen uniforms for Circle K (convenience store chain) and Fettes (the Scottish private school where Tony Blair studied) ]

Clothing shop

Very interesting mixture of ‘designer’ and ‘fashion statements’

ACCESSORIES?
[A live monkey at the clothing store!]

BAG SHOP
[This was at Christmas when special stocks came in
hence the impressive spread of goods]

Bag shop. Christmas specials

MEAT SECTION [I stay away from this section as much as possible.
There are no fridge, freezers or ice box.
There are, however, lots of flies and a strong smell.
Skip this section if you are vegetarian]

Crocodile
[Plastic bags are forbidden in the market by law.
It’s Bring-Your-Own-Bag or packed in leaves.]

Crocodile for sale at Meat market     Croc meat wrapped in leaf to take home

Live Turtle

Lizard
[I did not stay long enough to see if it was alive.]

Lizard for sale at the meat market

Live Electric fish

Electric fish for sale in the market

Antelope

Antelope for sale at the Meat Market

Live chickens running around
[not for sale]

Caterpillars
[Apparently they are nice and crunchy]

McDONALD’S
[Note the head of the goat on the floor]

Grilled meat shop

MY FAVOURITE SHOP
[It stocks almost all the food and grocery items the other shops stock.
Note the white red yellow plastic bags at the second bottom shelf on the right.
They are MSG – looks more like rat poison.]

My favourite store    Inside my favourite store

COSTCO / Wholesale shop
[50kg flour which we sieve through to get rid of bugs, 25L cooking oil, 5kg sugar]

50kg Flour

PICK N’ MIX
[Most people just buy small bags of salt, pepper, rice, sugar, flour etc.,
The fact that people buy 10 macaroni shells and teaspoons of coffee tell you
how much people can afford and how people live]

Many shops sell very small portions

PEANUTS and CHARCOAL
[Not for BBQ, but for cooking – the smoke is a risk factor for cataracts]

Store selling Fuel for Cooking and Peanuts

FRUIT AND VEG SECTION

Produce Aisle     Onion and garlic shop

Palm oil nuts and fruits   Produce aisle

So voila!  A brief tour of our town!

The most interesting thing about shopping here is that you never know what you are going to see e.g

Just walking around as you do in town

I would love to give you a personal tour!
