Clueless kids and Chuckling angels
April 19, 2013

21 years ago today, on Easter Sunday 19 April 1992, Henri was getting baptised in a river and I in an air-conditioned modern church building.  God said to His angels, ‘See that village boy being baptised over there in Gabon, and that city girl being baptised over there in Hong Kong?  They are completely oblivious to each other’s existence right now.  In fact, she has never even heard of the country Gabon.  In 8 years’ time, on 2 Dec 2000, they will meet under a massive rainstorm in the depths of Africa.  Their destinies will collide.  Right away they will know that they will marry each other.  Right away they will wonder if they have gone mad in the rainforest.  But for now and until then, they have absolutely no idea what is about to hit them… ’ The angels chuckled softly.

Fast forward to Easter 10 April 2005.  Henri and I were exchanging wedding vows in the same air-conditioned church where I was baptised.  God said to His angels, ‘See?  Told ya!  They may have some idea that I have joined them from different corners of the world to serve the people of Africa, but they are completely oblivious to the fact that in 7 years’ time, on another fateful Easter week-end, they will go pioneer an eye centre in remote Congo.  They will be consumed by a passion to help people see - both physically and spiritually.  They will leave their loved ones and their salaries, and wonder if they have gone mad in rainy England.  But for now and until then, they have absolutely no idea what is about to hit them…’ The angels chuckled softly.

Henri and I always chuckle at the thought of God and his team amusing themselves over our cluelessness at our Easter baptism and wedding.  Never in a million years would we have imagined then what was to become our story.  But God has always known - just like He knows our future, our kids’ future, and your future.

All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.  (Psalm 139:16)

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him. (1 Cor 2:9)

Easter 7 April 2012.  I looked out of the plane and saw Congo for the very first time.  I had absolutely no idea what was about to hit us.  I chuckled very nervously.  I took a deep breath and smiled, ‘Twenty-one Easters from now, I will look back and God, the angels and I will have a proper chuckle.’
